So, Jim gets a new job and Splat Macumba goes on hiatus? I'm disappointed and tired of waiting around for another post! As Tom Petty would say, the waiting is the hardest part. Let's go!

Dude, how do I get my hands on that Grays album? It doesn't seem to be available, at least not for download.

That Ambulance Ltd album is awesome.

Hooray for Espers and the Honeycombs! Check out this great video of the Honeycombs singing "Eyes." Way ahead of its time. Was there anything else this dark and intense in 1964? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqVc-NLEprQ Features great drumming, too; the kind of fills one associates with the Zombies.

Also: Am I the only one who doesn't get the Stone Roses?

Nice comments, Jim.

I'm usually the last person to compare anyone to Brian Wilson but Scott, I think you can actually make a case for Kevin Barnes.

Give him the budget Brian had in 1965-1967. Give him the studio musicians Brian had access to. I don't doubt he'd come up with something as astonishing as Smile.

Not to mention, Brian Wilson is not a good lyricist. Never was. Kevin Barnes is.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. I'm just saying it's a fair comparison. Honestly, I went through a period where I couldn't listen to Of Montreal. I was a big fan during the whole Elephant 6 days of Cherry Peel, Bedside Drama, & The Gay Parade. Then I had my fill for years until this record came out. It made me go back and check out the years I missed.

He's an acquired taste that you can sometimes have too much of but he's a pretty amazing talent.

Hey, thanks for the comment. I guess any time you compare someone to Brian Wilson, you're asking for trouble.

Nice to hear of Montreal discussed from an intelligent perspective that takes into account the artistic audacity of Mr. Barnes and contextualizes is within the realm of music theory. But I don't think you can put Kevin on the same plane as Brian Wilson. As far as gorgeous chromaticism and mode mixture goes... I'm gonna have to give the prize to Elliott Smith. Or Eric Whitacre lolz. Anyways Kevin Barnes is the man... quite possibly my favorite living songwriter.

This is a great one. I listened to it twice in a row while working yesterday and a few things struck me.

First - for being made 12 years ago, it doesn't sound dated. In fact, it sounds remarkably fresh. I hear a lot of modern indie rock in what they were doing in 1996.

Next - the harmonies. Lots of really close lines sung right under the melody. And the voices blend so well I wonder if it's Vanderslice doubling himself.

Finally - the hooks. None are giant, here-is-the-chorus choruses, though. They get in and get out. It's great economy for a 16 track album.

Haven't heard the Shatner version and I'm afraid to try it out. I don't even like The Beatles original.

Great covers:

Atlantic City - The Band
Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads
All Along The Watchtower - Hendrix (cliche, I know, but it is awesome)
Gin N' Juice - The Gourds (I highly recommend listening to this if you haven't already)
Rocket Man - Gin Blossoms
Something In The Air - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Big Pimpin' - Phish
Sabotage - Phish
Baba O'Riley - Pearl Jam
Young Man Blues - Foo Fighters

- that's all I got for now.

Possibly the worst cover of all time:

Louie, Louie - Ace Of Spades
----------------

(Jim - this topic will soon be on Ze Island of Sven - good/bad covers)
